2015 Medalist

The 2015 Urology Medal will be awarded to Dr. Terry W. Hensle

on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 15:00–15:10. Dr. Michael Mitchell will

present a tribute in his honor.

Dr. Hensle was born in New York City as a true Gothamite. He grad-

uated from the University of Pennsylvania where in addition to being

a scholar he excelled on the athletic field. He received his medical

degree from the Cornell University Medical College in 1968. After

completing his internship and general surgical residency on the Harvard

Surgical Services at Boston City Hospital, he served as a general

surgical officer with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1972. After

separation, he returned to Boston for a urology residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Following his general training he acted as a pediatric urology fellow under Dr. W. Hardy Hendren

and as visiting fellow with Sir David Innes Williams at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Following his fellowships he joined the faculty of the Department of Urology at the Columbia

University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He served as the Director of Pediatric Urology

at the Children’s Hospital of New York from 1978 to 2005 and was Director Emeritus from

2005 to 2011. He was the Given Foundation Professor of Urology as well as serving as the

Associate Director of the Department. He is currently the Emeritus Given Foundation Professor

of Urology at Columbia University.

During his time in Boston he acted as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School from

1968 to 1976 where he was involved with the development of total parenteral nutrition. Because

of this early interest and contribution he served as President of the American Society of Parenteral

and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) from 1983 to 1984. He has been an active professional leader

serving on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons and as Chairman of the

Council of Urology for the ACS. He is a past president of the Society of Peadiatric Urology (SPU),

the Northeast Medical Association (NEMA) and the New York Medical and Surgical Society

(NYMSS) and a member of the

American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons (AAGUS) as well as being a long serving member

of the examination committee of the American Board of Urology.

Dr. Hensle has served as Visiting Professor, or Visiting Lecturer more than 70 times in 11 different

countries. During the last 40 years he has done surgery for children in need all over the world.

In addition, he has served as Editorial Consultant of the Journal of Urology, The Journal of Pediatric

Urology, Urology, the Journal of Pediatric Surgery and Transplantation. Terry has been the author

or co-author of more than 180 peer reviewed publications in literature, has authored 42 text book

chapters, and 31 review articles. In addition, he has authored a non-medical book entitled, Golf

After Fifty: Playing Without Pain.

Because of these numerous accomplishments and as one of the leaders of pediatric urology who

help shepherd the field to full accreditation, we honor Terry Hensle with the 2015 AAP Urology

Medal Award.
